Project Profile:

Not every medical facility needs to be built from scratch.

Working with Bell/Knott Architects of Kansas City and with financing from PV Capital Group, OWN, Inc. helped renovate an existing Whole Foods Market in Overland Park, Kansas, while converting it into a medical research facility for Dr. Vince Clinical Research.

Responsiveness proved to be a key component of the project while working with the high design standards needed by the client. Together, the teams worked in tight coordination to transform the structure from meeting the needs of shoppers to meeting the criteria of a functioning hospital.

Once the OWN team was able to dig into things, the project took on an almost design/build quality. As the full picture came into view, plans were modified a lot on the fly. For example, discovering that a portion of the North wall of the structure had been buried and this led to water infiltration. To resolve this and other potential water issues, the OWN team designed a unique solution so water wouldn’t be diverted towards the doors.

In coordination with contractor JE Dunn® Construction, the OWN team also provided pavement analysis, and coordinated and relocated utilities.

The result?

What used to be a grocer is now a modern, 75,000-square-foot, patient-friendly medical facility geared toward clinical research.
