Project Profile:

Carthage faced a growing problem at the intersections of Dr. Russell Smith Way, Missouri State Highway HH, and the southbound I-49 ramps. These outdated intersections weren’t just inconvenient—they were unsafe. Traffic exiting I-49 frequently backed up due to a lack of signal coordination, while poor ramp alignment created dangerous sightlines and risky turning movements.

Future traffic projections painted an even grimmer picture. Overlapping operations between the intersections were inevitable, threatening to worsen congestion and safety hazards. Adding to the urgency was the anticipated traffic surge from a proposed 360-acre industrial park and nearby key destinations like schools, a hospital, and the Precious Moments Chapel. Without immediate action, the community’s economic potential and quality of life hung in the balance.

The Solutions:
Our team stepped in with a clear vision to turn challenges into opportunities.

At the heart of the solution: a single-lane roundabout designed to streamline traffic flow, eliminate overlapping operations, and improve safety for all.

To further enhance functionality, we realigned the southbound I-49 entry and exit ramps, moving them west to increase sight distances and create safer, more intuitive navigation. The roundabout’s design was tailored for semi trucks, ensuring the industrial park could efficiently handle the 150 tractor-trailers expected daily.

The results go beyond traffic flow. This redesign paves the way for growth, providing seamless interstate access for the industrial park, which promises to bring jobs and economic vitality to the region. Nearby schools, emergency responders, and community landmarks also benefit from smoother, safer routes, improving everyday life for residents and visitors alike.

With these solutions, we didn’t just address the current challenges—we laid the foundation for Carthage’s future. The city is now ready to grow safely, sustainably, and with purpose.
