Project Profile:

What do you do for a second chapter after a long career as a schoolteacher?

You open a brewery.

That’s exactly what happened when two friends started dabbling in beer making during retirement. As their skills improved, they looked to turn their hobby into a business. Together, they opened Wire Road Brewing Company, the first brewpub in the Battlefield, Missouri, area.

After working up drawings with Esterly Schneider & Associates, an architecture firm in Springfield, the owners found an interesting property falling under the jurisdiction of MoDOT, the City of Battlefield, and Greene County.

For starters, OWN, Inc. helped the owners clean up a gap in property ownership. The team then reviewed drawings and coordinated with the City to help these first-time business owners navigate a complicated process.

After the Field Services team suspected bedrock, drilling confirmed its presence. The research informed decisions on the Civil Engineering scope of the project. By repositioning the building on the lot, the team was able to avoid rock – and the added expense that would come with running the sewer line.

OWN also helped negotiate an emergency vehicle turnaround.

Next, a stormwater detention basin was built at the South end of the property. The site ultimately required a 330-foot sewer main extension, and a 300-foot water extension to bring services to the property for the first time. In addition, the clients were able to vacate a well and electrical easement as neither were no longer needed.

OWN went beyond – not only proposed solutions – but became a true partner in the success of the project. The team listened, considered the challenges faced by the client, and designed direct, cost effective solutions, not just what the team thought they needed.

After establishing themselves as purveyors of the best beer in town, the clients have set their sights on expansion: Phase 2 is earmarked on the adjacent 5-acre lot for additional parking and other exciting news the Wire Road folks will share soon!
